I'm now officially completely in love with the Black London series. I enjoyed Street Magic immensely and this follow up is equally good, if not better, though it does have a cliffhanger ending that will make it a long and hard wait for the next one in the series. Jack Winter is a blunt, forceful and unapologetic character who fascinates me on a par with Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden. The author's rich writing of Jack's Manchester accent is such that I can hear him in my head when I read, and the development of his complicated relationship with Pete adds further interest to the fast-paced action of the story (there's a demon after Jack, who's bargain has come due). Excellent, very edgy urban fantasy.

A bit different than I was expecting but quite interesting. The berserkers and their history was a nice twist on familiar folk monsters. One can really understand what Tom is going through and what is pushing him on. The plot twists are such that you can't predict just where the action is going to take things but it is a fun journey and the destination makes sense. If you like original horror, this one is for you.

I will not kid you. This book is intense. Temple may be 15, but the life she lives is very adult, and the situations she encounters are gut-wrenching. The book made me cry, more than once; it isn't going to be a good fit for everyone. It's a pretty grim world, and an unflinchingly violent one, but in spite of the monsters it's *not* a conventional horror story. If you come for catharsis, you'll get it, but maybe not the kind you expect. This isn't spine tingling; it's soul twisting. I won't be surprised if reviews are highly divided; those who are looking for conventional horror or are even further afield as I was may not be universally pleased. This is a great book a masterpiece, maybe for the *right* reader.

The book left me thoughtful and sad and grateful for what I have. Grateful, too, to have read it. I'm still caught up in the aftermath, having finished it moments before I started writing the review, so it's really too soon to say but I *think* I may have just found a contender for my shortlist of "favorite books."

This story does not have the depth of Dan Brown's novels. It might even be fair to call it "DaVinci Code-Lite". Yet, this does not prevent it from being equally entertaining. Once the action begins, it becomes a fascinating quest to see how all the involved parties will approach their part in the story and how it will reach its climax.

"In the Tongues of the Dead" is a quick read and it has some good Biblical mysteries and history for those who are fans of "The DaVinci Code". It is a quick read and is definitely recommended for those whose attention spans are not quite long enough to go through Dan Brown's work.

Author Tom Harper does a fine job describing the city of Constantinople under siege, the Greek intrigues that so frustrated the western Crusaders, and the various groups of mercenaries who defended the Empire while the mob often controlled its fate. Demetrios Askiates makes an intriguing sleuth, with his concern for his daughters and his ambivalent feelings toward the beautiful doctor, Anna. We can, perhaps, forgive 26-year-old author Harper for believing that a man in his mid-thirties is over the hill and unable to carry weapons effectively.

Fans of historical mystery will want to pick up MOSAIC OF SHADOWS and hope that we soon see more by Tom Harper.

This novel was by the best of the series. It was gripping, detailed, informative, but not wordy and "non-fictional." During the middle of the book, it can feel as though it is being "dragged" on while we wait for the enevitable attack on Jerusalem, however, it is an extremely important part of the book with Peter Bartemelu, as he gains the trust of the pilgrims, and the power from the princes. Mr. Harper makes a fine note of this himself at the end of the book, saying that not much happened while the princes waited and debated and fought amongst themselves for 8 months between Antioch and Jeruselm, a mere 40 miles!

You will not be wrong or bored in any way reading this book. The finale of an incredible series! Won't be disappointed.

When all is said and done, there is one big theme that goes through and through with this book: survival. Each element of the book deals with this very issue, from the ultimate survival of the human race in a hostile world, to the immediate survival of several characters who are neck deep in political and economic conspiracy to the various branches of government who want to see their vision of the future for their country to survive the coming turmoil.

What truly stands out for this book is the rich detail and fantastic prose. I've purposely taken my time with this book so that I could absorb as much as I could. What Bacugalupi puts together is a superior story, one of the best science fiction novels that I have read in a long time, one that takes the best from well thought out characters, plausible economics and science and a complicated story.

I generally don't go in for murder mysteries--unless they are set in Oxford of course. This "who done it" is quite unique, since it is written by an Argentinian mathematician and incorporates a bit of mathematical concepts and jargon into the storyline. The story is every bit as challenging as any mystery with which I am familiar. For those conversant with Oxford, you will encounter many familiar locales, and the author has done his homework in scoping out the city and surrounding environs. The fact that the central character is an Argentinian graduate student in mathematics confronted not only with serial murders but with a strange country and its unique culture as well only adds richness to the narrative. The book reads smoothly and quickly (it is 196 moderate-sized pages), and the American edition is beautifully done. A most pleasant excursion into math and murder.

There are a lot of twists and turns with just enough clues to help the reader but things may not be as they seem, which helps to make this one of the most chilling reads. The only downside is some of the UK terminology of the characters but it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book. The pace is well done with only a few bumps in the road and the reader finds their self cheering Tora along the way to solve the mystery of the dead woman hoping that all she loses will be worth it. To realize this offering is from a debut author is equally exciting because we have a wonderful new author to look forward to.

This is a most unique find and should be read by those who like a strong mystery along with a sprinkling of Celtic/Nordic legends and aren't afraid to take a chance on a new author.

The fantasy genre is well known for taking rich, varied, and well known mythology and twisting it up in new ways. Or at least, attempting to twist it up in new ways. Because let's face it, the vampire has already been invented. Now it's all about what you do with him.

So first, the really good- Cassandra Clare does a mighty fine job of taking rich and varied and well known mythologies and giving them a brand new spark of life that has not been written into the ground already. I enjoy that she picks bits of mythology from all over and uses it to create a world full of truths and half-truths and the people who have to deal with it all. This isn't just another fantasy novel. It reminds me of The Dresden Files for young adults.

The other really good thing about this book, is that the characters are a lot less cliched and stereotypical than most books in this genre. The main male character, Jace, might be pretty and the love interest (more on that in a moment) but he is also haughty, cocky, unlikeable and reactionary. She writes him so well that I sometimes find myself irritated with him- a beautiful and well drafted flaw. Who says our heroes need to be perfect anyway? This is also somewhat of a problem for her though too, because she tries so hard not to write predictable characters that they tend to fall out the other side of the extreme.

I'm also delighted by her fight scenes, which are clear and well written but not long and drawn out. Fight scenes have a tendency to be repetitive. She knows when to get on with it.

The bad- some of the prose is a little watered down. Contrite but clearly written with pleasure. Clare has never met a metaphor she didn't like. Still, the book was a page turner- I ferreted away in an empty cubicle at work to devour it during my breaks, flowery language or not.

The weird (and ugly)- The romance is bizarre. It's not even thinly veiled incestuous desire...it's right in your face and deals with it in a way that is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable. It makes me uncomfortable. I was at first horrified by her choice. Why would an author do this? But I am a little impressed with her ballsy choices for romances- a very homosexual blooming romance and a heartbreaking passion between two people who only recently found out their brother and sister. That's gutsy, and I can't say I haven't been craving some gutsy romances lately. But like I said, the incestuous romance is so weird it's not good. It reminds me a lot of the incestuous romance in The Royal Tennenbaums. I'm pretty sure we'll find out they aren't brother and sister, but honestly, the damage has been done.

Finally- I like Clary. She's weak and flawed and easily scared and up until the end of the second book, she's sort of a liability in every dangerous situation she's been in. And that makes sense, up until a very short while ago, she was a normal girl getting dressed up to dance at a goth club. It does surprise me though that no one offers to help her become less of a liability, until her powers manifest over night to make her super uber awesome. This is tragic. I'd rather have a main character who is just ok but brave and smart than one who can bring the world to its knees with no apparent explanation and no hard work.

But in the end, I was still captivated and still enthralled and I devoured it in a couple of days, to the neglect of everything else. In the end, that's what matters most to me.

I'm fairly shocked at several people remarking that they disliked Mildmay as well as Felix. Mildmay is one of the most compelling and likable characters I've seen in a novel in a good long time. He seems very real and very much a decent guy in a bad situation trying to make his best decision among not very promising options. Melusine is a dark world, and there's nobody in it that isn't marked by the darkness, but the mark of a character is what he chooses to do. And Mildmay's choices are very interesting. Even Felix, unlikable as he is, has an interesting story. Interesting things happen to him. You don't have to like a guy to find his story compelling.

If you want a shining hero on a white horse fighting guys in black hats, read a different book. If you want superior and challenging storytelling, this would be a great choice.

By gum, I love it when authors get gutsy and daring with their work. The only real downside to this story is that I'm going to have to wait until 2008 when the next novel is due to be released. And I suspect that I'm not going to be the only reader left wondering what will happen next. For those who like their adventure novels to be packed full of thrills and a breakneck pace, this is one that you can really sink your teeth into. Be warned that several scenes in this novel are rather brutal in the content, and Novik isn't shy about character death either. I also urge the reader to go back and read the series in order if they haven't yet -- there isn't any sort of synopsis or guide, and a great deal of the interplay and knowledge relies on what happens in the first three books.

Four and half stars, boldly rounded up to five.

Heartily recommended.

I'm almost tempted to guarantee that this plot will make you grow animated at some point, but I won't. Read the book, and see for yourself if you had the same reaction I did. For me, it was when I reached the end of chapter 17. I won't go into the details about what happened (because it is way too juicy to spoil for anyone) but all I could think and gasp and then scream was: "What, what, what, WHAT?!" In fact, I'm still flabbergasted. Biggest. plot. twist. ever. I loved it!

Allyson James has a new and interesting series well worth reading. Not only are the covers for this series beautiful (sorry, had to mention it), but her characters and plot are so unique and interesting that one would be deemed crazy for not giving this series a shot. You hear me? Get this book pronto!

Often, sequels suffer from the "sophmore slump", but The Virtu is actually a BETTER novel than Melusine, which was rather enjoyable. Monette gives us more insight into her 16th century-like world & grows her characters further, all the while providing us with puzzles to solve, gritting the teeth moments & laugh out loud moments. These characters are real people; their words get in their way as often do their pride. Ms. Monette writes with a sophisticated elan; silkily, the reader is drawn into this world but we must also pay attention, & those who do are rewarded well. Straightfowardly, Sarah Monette's writing skills are so sharp as to make herself invisible-the story comes to us through the characters' voices & thoughts, not the author's.

These books are fabulous. They deliver intriguing stories filled with characters you care about. Often with a series this large there is at least one weak book that pales next to the others. This is not true with the Temeraire series. Each book keeps you interested and invested from start to finish and when they're over you feel like you're parting with a dear friend. Ms. Novik is an exceptionally talented author I wish there were more of her caliber tackling historical fantasy.

The plot is not so interesting. The set-up is good. There is a lot going on that even an outcast/prisoner albeit with a powerful dragon in-tow, has to deal with. But the plot turns into a strange chase through the wilds of Australia that leaves much to be desired. The ending, however, is interesting and climactic. Does it make up for the weak middle/bulk of the book? Not quite, but to me, it was still worth reading, and the beginning and the ending had a lot of interest, even if the middle lagged a bit (even though it was full of adventure and peril and suspense). I'm not ready to give up on this series yet! I think parts seemed weaker mostly because expectations for this series is so high.

I can't recommend this book enough. It has all the everything you want from good speculative fiction (meticulous world-building, a desire to step into the universe), well-defined, charismatic, understatedly human characters you care about (though Temeraire is perhaps my favorite personality of all), a confident and elegantly polished prose style, emotional depths, gorgeous and inventive battle scenes (and I'm usually the type of reader to skim written battle scenes, but Novik writes so concisely about aerial battles that they are some of my favorite scenes in the book). It's a great book, extremely fun, addicting, polished, exciting -- I can't wait to read the next one, and the one after that. The last book of such promise from a new author was Susannah Clarke's "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell", and then I think I prefer Novik's to Clarke's. JS&MN is almost too ambitious for its own good, and Clarke has a lesser insight into human personality than Novik, while "His Majesty's Dragon" has no weaknesses. I can't perceive any faults or flaws, and recommend it whole-heartedly.

All that aside, the plot does move with its expected intricacy from point A to point B, Mehitabel's character emerges from the shadows, Mildmay continues to exhibit his extraordinary talent for finding his way through mazes both literal and figurative, and Felix narrowly escapes the gruesome fate planned for him by his enemies. By the time the book ends you do have reason to hope that life is going to improve for the brothers, which I suppose is about as much in the way of optimism as one can expect from such a dark, painful novel.

This is an excellent read. The book won't make any sense if you try to start with it, though, so begin at the beginning with Melusine if you haven't already. And if you've visited Ms. Monette's world before, by all means keep going with it. It's very much worth your time.

The author builds a world that is in the future and amid the chaos and supernatural, the author weaves a good story of how character changes with conquering fears, dealing with corruption and death of innocents, and finding love with a person who should be the enemy. I also liked the secondary character of the animal who watched over her. I loved how the author builds the story up and then at the end leads into the explanation of all our questions as readers. I thought there was a mention of the characters' engorged sex too often that it became intrusive to the story so towards the middle I started speed reading through those scenes so I could get back to the story. My preference is for the sex to be part of the story and there is a flow and balance to the mix between the two. And the cover art is beautiful! This is the first Jory Strong book I've read. I picked the book up while I was browsing in the book store because I liked the cover and found the title intriguing. I'm glad I did.

This was not one of those books that I regretted reading. As a young adult stand alone paranormal romance/mystery with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure, I enjoyed it. I couldn't put it down. I love the plot and the characters. This book kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. This book is a great addition for anyone who likes vampires and angels.

Bottom line is the fact that, as always, Mr. Connolly does not disappoint. He has a certain knack for providing lyricism midst chaos and with ever the ear for crisply delivered dialogue delivered as if it were being spoken directly. There is also the proper amount of hyperbole, injected whenever needed, while providing pause within the context of whatever background information is being provided. That said, Mr. Connolly is a master at pacing his stories and at always providing the proper mix of `telling and showing'.

If you enjoyed the previous Charlie Parker novels, and hunger for more of the same, you can't go wrong. And if you are new to the `crime' scene and seeking something other than hammered phrasing and rat-a-tat-prose, you are in for a treat.

The author is a master of establishing mood and motivation through the psychological maneuverings of his characters and his readers. Connolly's work is at once atmospheric, moody, dark and disturbing yet compelling and hard to put down. His prose is sometimes so lyrical and so defining that I find myself rereading a sentence or paragraph just to marvel at his styling. He can establish mood, a sense of disquiet, peril, or supernatural unease with a few well turned phrases. And his ability to build suspense and an impending sense of doom that is almost palpable to the reader is extraordinary. I highly recommend this series to those attracted to intense, pyschologically intricate, suspense thrillers.

Connolly's books are a kind of hybrid: the mystery/horror novel. Every Dead Thing's hero, Charlie Parker, returns in Dark Hollow in pursuit once again of a singular force of death and destruction (with a few peripherhal malevalent forces to be dealt with, as well). Charlie "Bird" Parker, who has nothing whatever to do with his musician namesake, is the adult equivalent of the child in The Sixth Sense (he sees dead people.) It is to the author's credit that the reader is able to take this seriously, primarily because of the oddly lyrical descriptions of the horrors that face the hero at almost every turn. Connolly's continuing theme is of lives and loves lost to horrific violence, and in Dark Hollow he takes us on a wretchedly cold trip through the upper reaches of Maine, in pursuit of Caleb Kyle who may or may not be the mythical, local equivalent of the bogeyman.

With the help of his two wonderfully well-conceived sidekicks, Louis and Angel, Bird sets out to accomplish several tasks: to find the missing daughter of a former police officer friend, to locate the missing Billy Purdue (and the millions in payoff money he may have intercepted with the result that quite a number of villains are on his trail), and to find the killer of Billy's estranged wife and son. There are many killings, all linked in some way or another to Caleb Kyle.

This is compulsive reading, highly recommended for those not faint of heart.

For his first novel John Connolly has written an outstanding thriller that is crammed full of suspense. The plot centres on Charlie Parker, a former police detective as he battles both with alcohol and the horrors that torment him following the violent murder of his wife and child. Parker throughout the course of Every Dead Thing attempts to track down a child killer, while at the same time graduating towards the activities of a serial murderer known as the Travelling Man. It would be unfair to elaborate on the plot in more depth. It is however, realistic to note that Every Dead Thing is at times standard thriller material, a taut page turner, believably frightening and totally engaging while at other times it adopts a more dark and menacing approach that takes the reader certainly beyond what I've previously experienced from other books defined as thrillers.

I recommend Every Dead Thing to you, read it with the lights bright and the doors firmly locked!

John Connolly is one fine writer: not only are plot and characters exceptionally well done, but his prose style is close to poetic. I re-read sections simply because the style was so grand. And he improves with each book. His protagonist in all three books is Charlie Parker, an ex-cop who left the force when his wife and child were brutally murdered in Connolly's first book, "Every Dead Thing". Characters introduced in this book follow through all three, so while "The Killing Kind" can be read on its own, many of the references to Parker's past can be better understood by a reading of the previous books. Which ain't all bad, folks, because, as I've said, this is one fine writer. Here, Parker is investigating the death of a young woman who was conducting research into a religious cult. No plot giveaways from your friendly reviewer, but be advised that the bad guy, "Mr. Pudd" is REALLY scary, and the uncertainty of the outcome persists to the very last page. I cannot recommend this book too much or praise Connolly's skills too highly. It's a "great read". And for fans, be advised that the fourth Parker novel, "The White Road", is available now from Amazon.com.uk. Trust me on this one, guys; enjoyment is guaranteed.

The characters in this book charmed me - every. single. one. I loved Ari, our heroine. She was strong, yet still vulnerable. The best part? She didn't act like a spoiled, whiny brat! The love interest, to me, is obvious from the very beginning. Sebastian is a truly swoon-worthy character, heritage or not, and I loved that he was so brave and fearless - even when he knew he wasn't invincible. I also love that Ari and Sebastian didn't go completely love-struck and just forget about the entire world around them. No, the tension was just a soft buzz. You knew it was there, but it never distracts you from the real story. The other characters, especially the house of "misfits", was exceedingly charming and the other characters were well-fleshed out and never deviated from themselves - no matter how rotten I thought they were. Ha.

Like I said, there was a definite cliffhanger. Of course, it didn't take the cliffhanger for me to be hooked ... the story pretty much had me from "hello" and I'm still not out of its trance even after I completely finished the story. One thing that caught me off-guard was the amount of offensive language in the book. I don't think it was completely necessary to the story at all, but it's there - so, if you have a younger child reading the book, you might want to take that into consideration. But it didn't make my interest in the novel stray any. This has to be one of my top most enjoyable reads so far this year. It's definitely a recommendation for paranormal lovers that may also have an interest in Greek mythology.

The writing is honestly nothing spectacular, any fifteen year old could have jotted down the same confectionary detail and drab sentencing. The narration was a bit whiny at times, and toward the end I kept asking myself (in the same fashion as when I watched the film) why is this person doing this? Did I miss something? Why? I don't think I'm wrong in assuming that a book should explain and display life even if it is fiction, not just randomly spit out plot and story arcs.

I'm also on board with everyone else when it comes to the ending. There's no excuse to leave a book in print without the final chapter. It's ludicrous and cheap and it left a bad taste in my mouth to go to "redridinghoodbook.com" to conclude the story. What is wrong with you LITTLE BROWN?

As I said in the beginning, I love the idea of this (though in the flesh it leaves a lot to be desired) and I really wanted to like it, but the whole - both film and tie in novel are left sloppy, unfocused, and generic.

I have been reading Magic Novels from the beginning. I have read the Brothers War probably three times and most of the early novels more then once. The sad thing is Magic Novels have been dwindling in their quality since the newest creative team has taken over and I haven't been able to get into the characters and the setting were pretty mediocre.

Then this gem came along! This novel was excellent form th emoment I picked it up! I simply could not put it down! It flowed very well and the writing style of Ari is very, very nice to read.

The story itself is good also and makes me enjoy the characters very much.

This book is filled with true heroism and bravery, with characters (most notably Deenie) growing tremendously and turning into people you feel proud of. One really loves these characters, mostly because they themselves act out of fierce love for their family, for their friends, and even for people they hardly know. Reluctant Mage is mostly the account of a long, terribly dangerous and arduous journey made by two friends going toward danger instead of away from it. And even though they go through hell, they can still make each other (and the reader) laugh out loud more than once. The new characters introduced in this book are very likeable, as well. I was impressed with how convincing everybody's personality was. The ending does not let you down in any way, and the writing stays really good throughout.

So if you're unsure about this book based on the previous one, do yourself a favor and read this! It's wonderful and will make you feel glad you read the first one in the duology.

I have to agree with the guy who reviewed this before me. I couldn't put this book down. There were times I got spooked a bit reading this in the dark. If I had to pick one word to describe Metro 2033, it would be "immersive." Some of the editing/translating got a little sloppy towards the end, but nothing to ruin the book. I can't wait for the other books to come out in English. Artyom is my new hero.

The intensity level of the book rarely flags so much so that the only reason I wanted to put it down was because it became too intense! Highly recommended for fans of plague novels, zombie novels, and true-to-life military operations novels.

Clines has come up with a fascinating cast of characters who, despite being superheroes, all seem like real people. I also loved the pace of the book, the believable dialogue, the black humor (a running contest to see who bagged the most famous zombie, for example), and the unexpected plot twists that never seemed forced or cliched. I'm already anxious for a sequel.

Ex-Heroes is a fantastic superhero novel, a fantastic zombie novel, and just a great story altogether. You know those books where you're only a few pages in and you realize "oh yeah, this author knows what s/he's doing"? They're few and far between, but Ex-Heroes is definitely one of them. If you're a fan of superheroes or zombies (or better yet, both), Ex-Heroes is a must-read.

I waited for this book, waited wondering what Guillermo could do after The Oxford Murders (the movie is ok, but the book is better)and then it came out....well it is good, different, but not as strong. While the premise of the Oxford Murders was mathematical, here the premise is more esoteric, fatalistic, almost deterministic with the same altruistic 'it wasn't me, I was good all along and was actually helping' character development. Although he is still a master at creating suspense and has an Agatha Christie' like gift of throwing you off the trail, the denouement is far less climatic and the premise held together with staples instead of nails; it reads wobbly.

All in all, a great read which can be done quite quickly and which reserves a good amount of satisfaction for the end without making you hungry for substance in between. He may show a bit of what I call 'Perez-Reverte' syndrome, that is, great story, good development, can't write an ending for his life, in this case, Guillermo manages far better than reverte.

This book has it all. Lively action, intrigues within intrigues, daring adventure, taut writing, sparkling dialogue, incredible plotting, depth of characterization, a sense of humor, and a sure hand at the literary tiller. It is so deeply atmospheric that you feel like you are in 1792 Philadelphia. The portrayals of various actual historical figures are realistic, believable, and enjoyable. Hallowed names of yore are brought to vibrant life, sounding and acting as real as your own family, yet their qualities which will make them famous still shine through. In The Whiskey Rebels actual historical personages are not the focus though and the stories of the two fictional protagonists is where this book truly dazzles. As Liss switches between them, chapter by chapter, I was so caught up in their individual experiences that I was inevitably jarred by switching viewpoints. His writing so tightly draws you in and is so absorbing that you don't want to leave the character you're with; yet within a few sentences you are once again completely absorbed with the current character. So it goes, back and forth, until the stunning denouement. If there is one thing that strikes me as magical about Liss's writing it is how well he does period dialogue. Writing compelling and scintillating dialogue is hard enough without having to make it sound natural to the 1790's. Liss does this with ease though; the conversations never ring false and they never stray from their period. The magical part though is the dialogue is as clear and understandable as speaking with a friend.

I have no criticism of this book at all; it was a nearly perfect book and if there was a flaw within it, I couldn't find it. I highly recommend it to any and all. In fact, I give it my highest recommendation.

By and large, these essays are completely gripping, in a thinker's sort of way. David Grann creates a narrative out of his search for meaning and closure in far-flung topics, and it's clear that he has done a lot of original research here. He has interviewed the people whose lives touch the topics of his essays, attempting to bring order to the chaos of unsolved investigations and answers to baffling human behavior. In a few cases, I found myself wanting to pursue the topic. Especially in the case of the man who was executed for arson in Texas, the conclusion that he may have been innocent is of more than academic interest.

I found myself bringing up the narratives in this book in conversation--can you believe this? did you know that? do you think this could be true? And I love that. When a book grabs me beyond the moment; gives me something to mull over and chew on; entices me back for another narrative--then I know I have found a treasure.

The mystery itself however, is a bit predictable, and the disguises don't always hide people's identities all that well. Also, I was a little frustrated by Absalom Pepper's cotton machine mentioned in the book; it's never actually described, so that it would seem more real. The author bites off a lot in writing about the East India Company, and I wish he had described it more in this book. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the characters and most of the story. Weaver has a biting, sarcastic wit, and he had me laughing at many places in the novel; he's is the reason why I keep turning back to this series.

I think Turtledove started off great with the series and the idea of technology equals magic. After all the "Americans" had the best sorcery, such as the rest crate; a box that suspends time so you can keep your food hot or cold until you need it. But with all his effort on the magical version of an A-bomb, Turtledove didn't plan for what people really want from practical sorcery. (Yeah, a tailor using a charm to do most of his hand-stitching is kind of cool, but why isn't that midwife using any of these arts?)

Still worth reading, still enjoyable, still has lots of thought behind the concept, and 300 times better than the poorly-executed Detina series (fantasy version of US civil war). But good enough that I dared to expect perfection and then was dissatisfied when I didn't get it.

This is a rather unique look at the legend of King Arthur. This is the tale of Niviene, daughter of the Lady of the Lake.

We see Niviene grow up from a young Fey still learning about her surroundings and follow her through becoming a mother and a companion to Merlin at the Court of King Arthur. Arthur starts as just a tale Niviene hears from Merlin during his visits to Avalon. Then there is their chance encounter and finally Niviene encounters him at Camelot.

But While this is an Arthurian tale there is very little about Arthur actually in it. Instead we learn about the Fey, how they feel about this human king and the plots and reasons of Merlin. We find out the truth behind Sir Lancelot and where he came from. We learn about Mordred's shadowed history. We even learn the truth behind the Holy Grail and why someone as wise as Merlin sent the knights of the Round Table looking for it.

All in all a very entertaining book that is both well-written and freshly plotted. I recommend this one to anyone interested in Arthurian legend.

These books sold very, very well for the author in what can only be described as an impossibly crowded genre. It seems every fantasy novelist attempts, at some point, a re-telling and definitive edition of the Arthurian myth. It is the only subject more trampled and copied than Tolkien. It is also the genre that lapses in to the most astonishing absurdities. Lawhead, with these three books (Taliesin, Merlin, and Arthur) has contributed something very relevant and very new to the genre. It gives the myth a burst of idealism and Christianity not seen since Tennyson with the Celtic traditions not seen since the Mabinogion. Sadly, with the publication of the latter three--and far lesser novels (Pendragon, Grail, and Avallon) the series is much damaged and diminished. We believe that Lawhead would've been far better served to let the trilogy stand on its own where it's not so intimidating and probably would've enjoyed subsequent reprinting. As it stands, our rating for this book is slightly tarnished by these later publications and endanger the proud work of a very, very good author.

WHO SHOULD READ:

Readers who enjoyed Tolkien a great deal and who read Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, and others searching for that same idealism will come closest to finding it here with Lawhead. Readers who enjoyed Marion Zimmerman Bradley's feminized version of the legend in The Mists of Avalon will find this work operating as a kind of opposite: Bradley employing the traditional pagan religious elements and feminism while re-working the French side of the myth while Lawhead invoking Christian theology and masculinity in t the Celtic side of the myth. They are very interesting to read together. These books are excellent choices for teenagers for whom idealism is second nature. Oddly, readers deeply impressed with the idealism of the people living in "The Land" in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever will find themselves deeply compelled by this work.

WHO SHOULD AVOID:

Scholars of Arthuriana, those more versed in Malory, Monmouth, Eschenbach, de Troyes, and even Tennyson, will probably be a bit disappointed. They are going to be much less impressed with what they might regard as overly-dramatic prose and much more sensitive to the liberties--particularly the Christian liberties--that Lawhead takes with the story. Certainly those readers who are inclined to much more cynical writing styles of the late 20th and 21st century--people who enjoy the subtle undercurrents and "un-heroism" of more modern irreverent works--will probably become bored and irritable with the constant nobility (just as they would become bored with Tennyson's Idylls of the King). People looking to investigate the actual history and evolution of the mythology would not be well-served by reading this book but should look to the actual source material of Malory and perhaps some of the earlier Celtic works such as Monmouth and The Alliterative Morte d'Arthure.
